Photography Workshop: Canadian Rockies Adventure with Adam Gibbs & Paul Thomson

Embark on an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking landscapes of the Canadian Rockies with acclaimed photographers Adam Gibbs and Paul Thomson as your guides. This week-long workshop is designed to inspire, challenge, and elevate your photography while exploring some of Alberta's Rockies' most iconic and lesser-known locations.

Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Meet & Greet in Calgary

We begin with a meet and greet at our Calgary hotel, where you’ll get to know your fellow photographers and guides.

Day 2 - 4: Autumn Magic at Abraham Lake

Our tour's first leg takes us to the west end of Abraham Lake, where autumn colours blanket the landscape. We’ll spend three days photographing the vivid foliage, the lake’s unique features, and the dramatic mountain scenery.

Day 5: Icefields Parkway to Jasper

Continuing north, we’ll travel along the world-famous Icefields Parkway, stopping to photograph its awe-inspiring landscapes. We’ll spend the night near Mount Athabasca, under the shadows of towering glaciers.

Days 6–7: Lake Louise & Beyond

We journey south to spend two nights in the enchanting Lake Louise area. Here, you’ll have the chance to capture:

  • Lake Louise – its turquoise waters and mountain backdrop.

  • Bow Lake – a gem along the Icefields Parkway.

  • Takakkaw Falls is one of Canada’s highest waterfalls.

  • Castle Mountain & Peyto Lake – iconic stops bursting with photographic opportunities.

  • Herbert Lake – a quiet retreat with stunning reflections.

Day 8: Canmore – Gateway to the Rockies

Our adventure winds down as we head to Canmore, home to some of the Rockies’ most famous landscapes. Highlights include photographing:

  • The Three Sisters – iconic peaks bathed in the golden light of sunrise or sunset.

  • Vermilion Lakes – serene waters reflecting the majesty of the surrounding mountains.

  • Lake Minnewanka – a stunning glacial lake framed by rugged peaks.

Day 9: Return to Calgary

On the final day, we’ll return to Calgary for one last night together before you fly home, enriched by new skills, incredible images, and lifelong memories.

How challenging will the hiking be? PLEASE READ, IMPORTANT!

Hiking? Who said anything about hiking? Yes, we will be walking to some locations. The distances are typically no more than 1 km or so. However, all locations will require a walk, including hills. If you have mobility problems, this is probably not your trip. 


What camera gear should I bring?

The following are some recommendations. Generally, we will be focusing primarily on landscape photography but may encounter some wildlife shooting opportunities. Ideally, since we will be walking throughout the day and carrying our gear, equipment should be kept to a minimum. Here is a list of what we typically carry in the field. A more detailed "what to bring" list will be sent to you before the workshop. If you shoot wildlife and own or use a considerable lens, you are welcome to bring it.

 

Camera Equipment:

 

  • Tripod w/geared or ball head

  • Camera backpack

  • Camera body

  • 14-24mm lens

  • 24-120mm lens

  • 70-200mm lens

  • Various ND filters/polarizers/holders for all lenses

  • Two extra batteries

  • Lens pen/lens cloth

  • lens shade

 

Other items that should make your day more comfortable in the area. Either worn or put in your pack for the day.

 

  • Rubber boots or waterproof hiking boots

  • Long pants

  • Brimmed hat

  • Warm jacket

  • Rain jacket

  • Snack bars/lunch/something to drink

  • Headlamp/flashlight

  • Sunglasses
